A look at the Child Life Program
In the Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology Unit
The Child Life
Program was developed to help make the hospital experience a more positive
one for children of all ages. Child Life Staff provide emotional and
social support while addressing the child’s concerns and reactions to
hospitalization and illness. Additional support is provided through
distraction and pain
management techniques.
As an integral part of the health care
team, Child Life prepares and educates children prior to surgery, medical
tests and procedures. This is designed to minimize stress, enhance coping
skills and promote an optimal response to medical and therapeutic care.
A
Child Life Specialist can . . .

and cope with medical procedures through preparation and education.
¨
Provide entertaining age
appropriate play opportunities to enhance development, including games,
arts and crafts, movies, or music.
¨
